Since I’ve been interning with NAMI Iowa for about a month now, I thought I would share a few highlights of my internships, things I’ve accomplished so far and things I’m looking forward to.
As the communications intern, I’ve been doing quite a bit of writing: I’ve helped draft a few press releases for NAMI’s upcoming Day on the Hill event, which takes place next Wednesday. I’ve also written up emails to send to Iowa state legislators encouraging them to meet with their constituents who plan on visiting the Capitol that day.
To make sure attendees are able to reach out to their legislators beforehand, I have been updating a spreadsheet that matches attendees with the names and contact information of their state senator and representative who represent their district.
I have also gone through NAMI Iowa’s list of media contacts to ensure the current list contains the most up-to-date information about the reporters listed and that they are still active in their respective media organizations.
While much of the work I’ve done so far has taken place at a desk, I’m excited to join NAMI at their Day on the Hill and take a more active role in helping advocate for mental health in Iowa.
I can’t wait to let you all know how the day goes and what all I learn from that experience!
